Step By Step Directions

Step 1 —

Find The Small Track Entrance From Patonga Drive, look for a narrow bush track leading off into the scrub. The entrance is easy to miss if you’re driving too quickly. The track starts climbing almost immediately.

Step 2 —

Begin The Uphill Climb The path is narrow but fairly easy to follow. You’ll head uphill through thick coastal bushland with:

* Scribbly gums

* Sandstone sections

* Tree roots

* Low scrub The climb is short but can feel steep in sections.

Step 3 —

Continue Following The Worn Pad There are a few smaller side paths throughout the walk but the main trail is generally the most worn and obvious. As you gain elevation the bush starts opening up slightly and you’ll begin getting glimpses of the coastline through the trees.

Step 4 —

The Final Rock Scramble Near the end of the walk the track reaches the sandstone rock platform. To access the very top section of Elephant Rock there’s a short rock scramble. It’s not overly difficult in dry conditions but you’ll definitely want to take your time here. Once up top, the views completely open up.

What To Expect At Elephant Rock:

Elephant Rock is a huge sandstone platform sitting above the coastline with panoramic views over:

* Patonga

* Broken Bay

* Palm Beach

* Hawkesbury region

* Brisbane Water National Park

The rock itself has a really unique shape and layered sandstone textures throughout. There are also some interesting Aboriginal engravings nearby if you look carefully across the rock platform.

The Views:

This is honestly one of those places where photos barely do it justice.

You get:

* Ocean views

* Bush views

* Clifftop scenery

* Huge open sandstone platforms

Sunrise and golden hour here are especially incredible. Just be extremely careful near the edges as there are sheer drops with no barriers.
